24 to 28 Hour Shifts for Resident Doctors are back!

The accrediting organization for medical programs has decided to increase the cap from 16 hours to 24 hours! In fact, the program rules allow for someone to have up to a 28 hour shift – if they have to transition a patient to another doctor.

I must admit, I have never understood this approach – as it feels like it flys in the face of all of the science that has been done on the impact of sleep deprivation – to include studies specifically focused on medical residents.

But I don’t need to be a scientist to think this may be wrong – Being the father of a teenager has taught me when no learning occurs when the person is tired!
